An /uw/ Story

Sue was not a very popular girl. In school, her classmates would often poke fun at her because she looked very fat and ugly. Perhaps this is why Sue was often in a bad mood. After all, being made fun of can make anyone feel blue. It wasn’t long before Sue felt that she couldn’t stand to be in school anymore. Her parents didn’t mind if Sue wanted to transfer to a new school, but Sue had other plans. Sue stopped attending school one day. It was almost the end of the school term, so her classmates hardly noticed. By the next term, almost everyone had forgotten about Sue. This was partly because of a new student who looked like every young man’s dream come true. Her name was Susan and she proved to be more than just looks. Susan was athletic and quite intelligent too, which made the girls think that she was really cool. Pretty soon, Susan met with a real heartthrob named Andrew. Susan and Andrew seemed to be on the path of true love. Andrew was handsome and quite athletic too, which made him a really good match for Susan. Furthermore, they soon found out that they had similar interests too. Susan loved to draw cartoons while Andrew liked to write stories. It seemed like everything was going just right for Susan. Soon however, people started to notice something about the way this girl looked at you. There was something evil and fake about Susan, almost as if her eyes were making fun of you. Of course, no one would dare call out the most popular girl in school – much to Susan’s gleeful delight. Of course, you are probably aware of the truth, that Susan is none other than fat and ugly Sue. Of course, Sue would never tell anyone about the surgery she had gone through. Sue, who was now Susan, delighted in her newfound status at first; but soon, on top of her popularity, the pressure grew. She had to deal with the constant demands of her brooding boyfriend Andrew and the whispers from people that she hardly knew. There was really no way out for Susan, this much she knew. She was worried that any day now, her disguise would be seen right through – and the newspaper headlines would read that “Susan is Sue.” Then, one day as Susan was coming home from school, a cold wind blew. This threw Susan off her feet and caused her to pass out.   Susan woke up in a hospital bed. She took hold of a handheld mirror that was lying right next to her. Looking into the mirror, she realized that she was looking at Sue’s face and not Susan’s. At that moment, Sue knew the truth. She hadn’t been through surgery yet and everything she saw was just a dream – a dream of a future that would never come true – because Sue decided that it’s cooler to just be you.

A /u/ story

We used to play a lot by the woods. In fact, I would say that we played by the woods a lot more often than we should have. It was there by these woods somewhere near a brook, where we met this stranger. In hindsight, he was quite a shady character and could easily have been mistaken for a crook. He never told us his name, so we simply called him “The Hood,” right after the hood that he always wore. As far back as I could remember, the Hood was a very tall man. He would always seem to tower over us kids when he stood up straight. Although he was a man of very few words, the Hood was like a hero to us kids who liked to hang out in the woods. After all, unlike the other adults, the Hood would teach us neat tricks like how to swim, make a fire in the woods and how to cook meat over an open flame. For us kids, the Hood was the hero of the woods.

Back then, the Hood had sworn us to secrecy about his presence in the woods and we treated this pact like it was a brotherhood. Come to think of it, we even named ourselves the Brotherhood of the Hood. If there was one thing that really stood out about the Hood apart from his trademark hood, it would be this book that he always carried with him. He would always look into this book with solemn eyes before teaching us a cool new trick that we could try out. We started speculating about the contents of the book and the true identity of the Hood. We came to an agreement that the Hood must be a superhero with a secret identity and that book was his source of power, probably given by some good-natured alien.

One day, the news on the radio talked of an escaped criminal who might be lurking in the woods. I was smiling at the thought of some third-rate criminal meeting up with the Hood. What a surprise it would be for the criminal when he gets caught by the Hood. In fact, I had to see it for myself, so I took off into the woods as fast as I could.

It was deep in the woods, by the brook where we often met with the man known as the Hood, when something shook me from behind and grabbed me off my feet.

Hood? Is that you, Hood?”

But when he raised me up so I could take a look, I realized that it was not the Hood. At that moment, I understood that this must be the criminal who had escaped into the woods.

At the top of my lungs, I screamed, “Hood! Where are you? Save me, Hood!”

And right on cue, our hero, the Hood, emerged from some hidden part of the woods.

“Let the boy go,” said the Hood.

The man glared at the Hood with a murderous look in his eyes. He took out a huge knife from his pocket. With the criminal occupied, I saw my chance and bit his arm as hard as I could. He dropped me on the ground and I landed on my foot. The Hood didn’t miss his chance and tackled the criminal as hard as he could.

“Go, Hood! Go!” I cheered for the Hood.

But something was wrong – quite simply put. The Hood should have already won, but what I saw was the criminal with a crooked smile on his face and a bloody knife about to strike the Hood. It was then that I understood that the hood was no superhero. He was just a regular man who liked to wear a hood and he could get killed because of me.

At that moment, I had seen all that I could and I collapsed from where I stood.

I woke up to the sound of Police sirens and found myself in my Dad’s arms.

An /e/ Story

Beth led a life that would make a lot people envious. After all, at the tender age of ten, Beth was already quite well-off since she had a career as a child actress. To add to this, Beth lived in quite a luxurious dwelling place since her family was quite wealthy from the very beginning. Unfortunately, for Beth, being wealthy and popular does come with a few setbacks – such as other girls becoming envious.

Beth’s dilemma began when she had to transfer to a new school because of the nature of her career as a child actress. At first, all of Beth’s classmates seemed to want to be friends with her because she was a popular and wealthy child actress that most of them had seen on TV – except for shy little Meg. Then, one day, Beth saw something nasty written on her desk. It read: “Beth likes to wet her bed and her best role is when she’s playing dead.”

Beth’s classmates noticed the writings on her desk and as luck would have it, they began to tease her. Everyone pitched in except for shy little Meg.

Beth, Beth, she always wets her bed! She may be an actress, but she can only play dead!”

Beth simply shrugged this off even though it made her cheeks blush red. Inside her locker, Beth saw a note inked with a red pen. The note read: “Beth, stay away from Fred or we’ll have your head.”

Beth thought for a moment. “Who is this Fred? Isn’t he the nice boy who helped carry my books yesterday?”

Because Beth lived a sheltered life, she did not fully understand the threat behind the letter inked in red. “Beth, you’ve become the target of Deb and her friends. You’d better be careful from now on,” warned shy little Meg. Deb was the second most popular girl in school and she led this group of girls who were always at her beck and call. They called themselves the “Trend Setters

The bullying got worse in the days ahead. One time, someone splashed water on Beth’s dress. Another time, someone pinned a note on her back that read, “I’m Beth the actress and I like to wet my bed.”

Finally, Beth talked to Fred and said, “Fred, my life is becoming quite a mess. I need some rest, so please pretend that we’ve never met.”

At this point, Meg had become Beth’s one and only friend, “Beth, why did you have to send away Fred? You can’t let the Trend Setters get what they want.”

“It’s for the best, Meg. The Trend Setters are going to stop now and my troubles will end.”

Beth, for an actress who always looks so well-read, you’ve got a pretty empty head. I’m telling you this as your friend. It’s a mistake to send away Fred.”

Beth thought that this would put an end to the bullying; but instead, it just got even worse for her after she sent away Fred.

The Trend Setters never let up on Beth and they even went as far as to cut up her dresses from behind when she wasn’t looking. Shy little Meg came up to Beth and gave her a pat on the head.

Beth, you need to stand up and talk to Deb.”

“I’m too tired, Meg. I’m not ready to talk to the Trend Setters yet.”

“Will you do it if I come with you and help, Beth?” Meg offered in earnest.

Beth simply nodded her pretty little head. Without a moment’s notice, Meg took her hand and they went to see Deb and her Trend Setter friends.

Deb, Beth wants to say something to you,” said Meg.

“And why should I listen to an actress who likes to wet her own bed?” Deb replied as her friends laughed in the background.

“Please, Deb. I’ve already sent away Fred, so can’t you stop bullying me along with your friends?” Beth begged.

“No can do, Beth. You’re the Trend Setterstarget until you’re dead.”

“If you’re going to keep on bullying my friend, then I’ll become your enemy too, Deb.” Said shy little Meg.

“You think I’m scared of a little girl like you, Meg?” Deb extended her hand to grab shy little Meg by the neck.

Meg grabbed Deb’s hand with all her strength and Deb yelled in pain.

“Don’t underestimate me, Deb. I’ve dealt with bullies like you before.”

“You dare to hurt me? I’ll have my revenge!” Deb yelled as the trend setters circled Beth and Deb.

“That’s quite enough, girls,” said the school head, who was being accompanied by Fred and everyone from Beth and Meg’s class.

“Stop bullying Beth,” everyone said. Beth’s dilemma would finally end.

From that day on Beth and Meg became the best of friends along with Fred. Meanwhile, Deb and the Trend Setters faced darker days ahead as the last incident almost got them expelled and they were being monitored closely by the school head.
