An /IY/ Story

At first, there were indeed only a few kids who could relate to Lee. Lee’s experience was something that you would not wish on your own worst enemy. It was at the tender age of three when Lee was out watching a movie with his parents. Just as they were leaving their seats, a strange man came up to them. All that Lee could see was that the man started arguing with his father. Frightened, Lee closed his eyes and he heard the sound of people screaming and some kind of fearsome thunder. As you can imagine, this kind of experience was quite traumatizing for a child who was only three years old at that time. Perhaps this is why when Lee was brought to the orphanage, he could hardly even speak. Fortunately, it was as if some unseen power had been watching over Lee. Despite all odds, Lee surprised everyone by beating all the other kids his age in the orphanage in terms of physical and mental ability. Furthermore, Lee always remained humble and obedient despite his natural abilities. This is why Lee earned many friends and not a single enemy among his fellow orphans and classmates in school. His friends even made up a chant for Lee. “His name is Lee! Always trying to be the best that he can be! Let’s all hear it for good old Lee!” When Lee reached the age of thirteen, the curator of the orphanage decided that Lee was ready. She told Lee of what had happened on that day ten years ago when he was only three. When he learned the truth, Lee did not shed a single tear. Something stronger than anger had been awakened inside thirteen year-old Lee. The curator, Ms. Sheila, gently asked Lee, “Don’t you want to cry on my shoulder, Lee?” “My tears won’t bring them back, Miss Sheila,” was Lee’s sincere reply. From that day on, people began to see that a great change had come over Lee. He was still the same sweet kid from before, but he became even more driven to be the best that he could be. “Someday, we will meet.” People would often hear this line from Lee. Many years passed and Lee became the great success that everyone always knew he would be. It was then that Lee set out on a journey to seek out the man – no, the beast who had killed his family. He invested nearly everything he had earned to fund his travels by land, air and sea; looking for leads on his parents’ killer. Finally, after fifteen long years of searching, Lee found himself face to face with his nemesis. “Time has not been kind to you, I see. Do you still remember me?” Lee gleefully asked his great enemy. “I’m afraid that I cannot even see, so why would you ask this of someone as old, frail and useless as me?” “You took everything from me,” Lee wanted to say, but his words came out as a bloodcurdling scream. Lee grabbed the man by the neck quite suddenly and prepared to do a most horrible deed. The blind man struggled and screamed in agony, but could do nothing against the younger and stronger Lee. “Lee, what do you think you’re doing?” “At a moment like this, who could it be?” Lee thought. It was none other than Ms. Sheila, the curator of Lee’s old orphanage. With an evil glint in his eye that almost frightened the old lady, Lee raised the man that he had been holding by the neck right off the ground. “Ms. Sheila. Do you remember when you told me about my past back then? This is the man who killed my family – the man who took everything from me!”

An /i/ story

There was once a little girl named Trish. She was the fifth child of the family. Her favorite dish was buttered fish, which her mother would often cook her for dinner. Trish was only six years old, but she was quite mature for her age – which is something that her parents would soon learn. Trish was Miss Miller’s favorite student. This is because Trish was not only very obedient, but she was also quite intelligent. This is the reason why Miss Miller found it a bit strange when Trish did not show up for school one rainy day. “Mickey, have you seen Trish today?” Miss Miller asked. “I passed her on my way to school. I think she was talking with Nellie earlier, Miss Miller.” Mickey replied.

Trish and Nellie came in very late for school. To Miss Miller’s surprise, Trish was holding a kitten wrapped in a towel in her arms.

Trish! Nellie! Why did you two bring that filthy thing inside?” Miss Miller said. “Trish insisted that we do, Miss Miller. We both found her by the garbage can on the way to school.” Nellie answered. “Trish?” “Well, Miss Miller. Nellie saw the kitten all by itself and she suggested that we give it something to eat. I thought it was a good idea at first, and I could give it some of the buttered fish from my lunch.” “But then what happened, Trish?” “I thought about the kitten and how it was just like us kids, Miss Miller. Without its parents, it would get to eat for today if we fed it, but what about tomorrow or the next day? That’s why I said we should bring it with us.” “Trish…” Miss Miller paused for a moment. Trish and Nellie thought that they were in trouble at first, but then Miss Miller began to speak. “I think you both learned a very important lesson today and everyone should be able to learn it as well. Why don’t we take care of this kitten together as our official class mascot?” When Trish’s parents came to pick her up, she was very wet. Instead of scolding her however, they greeted her with a big hug – thanks to Miss Miller who had called them on the phone and told them about how mature their daughter and had been.

An /UW/ Story

Sue was not a very popular girl. In school, her classmates would often poke fun at her because she looked very fat and ugly. Perhaps this is why Sue was often in a bad mood. After all, being made fun of can make anyone feel blue. It wasn’t long before Sue felt that she couldn’t stand to be in school anymore. Her parents didn’t mind if Sue wanted to transfer to a new school, but Sue had other plans. Sue stopped attending school one day. It was almost the end of the school term, so her classmates hardly noticed. By the next term, almost everyone had forgotten about Sue. This was partly because of a new student who looked like every young man’s dream come true. Her name was Susan and she proved to be more than just looks. Susan was athletic and quite intelligent too, which made the girls think that she was really cool. Pretty soon, Susan met with a real heartthrob named Andrew. Susan and Andrew seemed to be on the path of true love. Andrew was handsome and quite athletic too, which made him a really good match for Susan. Furthermore, they soon found out that they had similar interests too. Susan loved to draw cartoons while Andrew liked to write stories. It seemed like everything was going just right for Susan. Soon however, people started to notice something about the way this girl looked at you. There was something evil and fake about Susan, almost as if her eyes were making fun of you. Of course, no one would dare call out the most popular girl in school – much to Susan’s gleeful delight. Of course, you are probably aware of the truth, that Susan is none other than fat and ugly Sue. Of course, Sue would never tell anyone about the surgery she had gone through. Sue, who was now Susan, delighted in her newfound status at first; but soon, on top of her popularity, the pressure grew. She had to deal with the constant demands of her brooding boyfriend Andrew and the whispers from people that she hardly knew. There was really no way out for Susan, this much she knew. She was worried that any day now, her disguise would be seen right through – and the newspaper headlines would read that “Susan is Sue.” Then, one day as Susan was coming home from school, a cold wind blew. This threw Susan off her feet and caused her to pass out.   Susan woke up in a hospital bed. She took hold of a handheld mirror that was lying right next to her. Looking into the mirror, she realized that she was looking at Sue’s face and not Susan’s. At that moment, Sue knew the truth. She hadn’t been through surgery yet and everything she saw was just a dream – a dream of a future that would never come true – because Sue decided that it’s cooler to just be you.
